چکیده
Abstract When quickly detaching an elastomer from a counterface, viscoelasticity dramatically increases the perceived adhesion relative to its adiabatic or equilibrium value. Here, we report simulations on sticking contact between rigid cylinder and viscoelastic half space revealing maximum in work of separation at intermediate pull-off velocities. Maximum tensile forces yet increase monotonically with speed crack tip accordance Persson-Brener approach. As predicted theoretically, fracture mode transitions interfacial propagation quasi-uniform bond breaking increasing range adhesion.

Crack propagation in viscoelastic solids.
We study crack propagation in a viscoelastic solid. Using simple arguments, we derive equations for the velocity dependence of the crack-tip radius, a (v) , and for the energy per unit area to propagate the crack, G (v) . For a viscoelastic modulus E (omega) which increases as omega(1-s) (0< s< 1) in the transition region between the rubbery region and the glassy region, we find that a (v) appr...
متن کاملLubrication of soft viscoelastic solids
Lubrication flows appear in many applications in engineering, biophysics, and in nature. Separation of surfaces and minimisation of friction and wear is achieved when the lubrication fluid builds up a lift force. In this paper we analyse soft lubricated contacts by treating the solid walls as viscoelastic: soft materials are typically not purely elastic, but dissipate energy under dynamical loa...
متن کاملShearing of fibrillar adhesive microstructure: friction and shear-related changes in pull-off force.
To characterize the effect of shearing on function of fibrillar adhesive microstructure, friction and shear-related changes in pull-off force of a biomimetic polyvinylsiloxane mushroom-shaped fibrillar adhesive microstructure were studied. In contrast to a control flat surface, which exhibited pronounced stick-slip motion accompanied with high friction, the fibrillar microstructure demonstrated...
متن کاملA Model for Predicting the Multiscale Crack Growth Due to an Impact in Heterogeneous Viscoelastic Solids
A two-scale model for predicting the multiple crack growth in viscoelastic solids due to an impact is presented. The cracks are considered only at the local scale through the use of a micromechanical viscoelastic cohesive zone model. The multiscale model has been implemented in a finite-element code. In order to minimize the computation time, the local finite-element meshes are solved in parall...
متن کاملAdhesive interactions of viscoelastic spheres
We develop an analytical theory of adhesive interaction of viscoelastic spheres in quasistatic approximation. Deformations and deformation rates are assumed to be small, which allows for the application of the Hertz contact theory, modified to account for viscoelastic forces. The adhesion interactions are described by the Johnson, Kendall, and Roberts theory. Using the quasistatic approximation...
